A noisy refrigerator is the worst. If the refrigerator in your home seems to be a little louder than it usually is there are a few easy place that you can check while trying to find a solution. There are several fans on a home refrigerator that might create loud sounds. The appliance could also not be level too. Or you might have a compressor that’s wearing down. If your refrigerator is a lot noisier when the ice maker is working, the sounds might be a broken a water valve.

There are some basic components that should be checked. Like is the refrigerator too full? A refrigerator that’s too will often cause glass bottles and other food items to clink together. This can create a lot of loud sounds inside the refrigerator that’s not ideal because the refrigerator is cooling and thereby creating a small vibration.

If you have a model of refrigerator that has a water dispenser or ice maker but do not have the water connected, be sure you shut off the water dispenser and ice maker. There’s almost always a button on the dispenser that can be pressed to turn off the water dispenser. And as far as the ice maker, you just need to lift the bar. If the refrigerator is installed near a wall in the kitchen, it will cause the normal operating noise to seem much louder than it really is. This is a result of the echoing of the sound of the machine. Slide the refrigerator out from the kitchen wall and see if that helps. A refrigerator should be around 2 inches from the rear wall of the kitchen to limit the noise.

If it’s not one of these basic and easy fixes, it’s time to explore the issue further. Most of the time, the refrigerator fans are the cause of a loud refrigerator. There are fan blades that sometimes get dirty and clogged. Often times the fan motors do as well. There’s a condenser fan and an evaporator on refrigerators too. Many times the condenser fan gets a coating of dust on it and needs to be cleaned regularly. If it gets too heavy it can wear out the bearings inside of the fan’s motor.

Clean the Fan & Refrigerator Condenser Coils

behind the refrigerator. Most of the time you will want to have a wrench or screwdriver to remove the back panel. Once off you will see a fan inside. If it’s full of dirt and dust, get a cloth and gently wipe it off. While you are in there you should check the coils as well. The coils are typically near there and will be full of the same grime and dust that the fan is. Wiping down the coils will only take a couple of minutes but it will certainly help the refrigerator run more efficiently. This is actually a very common issue that causes a refrigerator to run non-stop.

Spin the fan blades. Do they spin easily? If not it means the fan motor bearings are broken. This is a simple fix, as the fan assembly is usually a unit that can be purchased online and can be replaced by just disconnecting it. However, before trying this, be sure the refrigerator is not plugged in. Do the same process for the evaporator fan in the refrigerator, which is typically located behind the freezer. This is not usually the issue, as this fan is concealed within the walls of the refrigerator. But, if the sounds are coming from the top of the refrigerator that’s the area to check.

If you think it might be the refrigerator compressor, the big, usually black or gray object under the refrigerator near the coils, we recommend calling Leading Yuma Appliance Repair. That’s not a repair a homeowner should try.
